Fiber Weekend: Raising Fiber Alpacas

From Cria to Huacaya

Alpacas are so much more than a cute face and a fluffy butt. Raising them can be so beautiful and so much fun, but it also takes a lot of real work. Are you interested in raising fiber animals? This work shop will teach you all that you need to know on what it takes to raise a fiber grade alpaca herd with specifics for the ecology of the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina.

Instructors: Grace Rector & Stella Nelson

We are managers for an alpaca farm in Leicester, NC called Durrant Farms Estate. Combined, we have 4 years experience of raising fiber-grade alpacas in Western North Carolina. With backgrounds in sustainability and ecology, we really care about the future of agriculture. At Durrant Farms, our regenerative agriculture practices allow us to put this into practice. Alpacas are our primary livestock we have chosen to raise. They are amazing animals who grow functional fiber and are great for the land.
