Herb Day: Making Your Own Tinctures, Herbal Liquid Extracts

with Erin Cummings

In this workshop we will explain and demystify the process of making a tincture (a liquid herbal extract). We will work with both fresh aerial plant parts and dried roots, and go over the entire process of wildcrafting, harvesting, garbling, macerating, and extracting the end product. We will also discuss the medicinal compounds found in herbs and their solubility in alcohol, water, glycerin, apple cider vinegar, and the tools used in the tincture making process.

Samples of various tinctures will be available, and in addition to hands-on tincture making (student participation is encouraged but not necessary) we will demonstrate several alternative tools and methods. Students will be able to take home a sample from what we make in the demonstration.

Students will also leave with a detailed handout to use as a long-term reference at home.
