Skills and Tools for Creating More Community Wherever You Are

with Linwood Watson, Morgan Siem, Tamara Sanders and others

Community can be created or encouraged wherever you are. Connection to others and a sense of community with others has both physical and emotional benefits. We will hear from a panel of community builders how they have helped create and find community where they are. We will also look at ways to evaluate how much community you have, specific tools and skills to develop more community, and things that fracture or discourage community. We will also look at identifying  central themes to build community around (e.g. close geographic proximity like a neighborhood, shared central value or interest like woodworking or contra dancing, specific identity or foundational way if seeing oneself like Native American or native North Carolinian, or kinship or shared experiences such as extended family or veteran).  We will also explore how communities develop cultural norms and handle conflict or disagreements and also ways to improve  communication within communities and improve community dynamics overall. The workshop will also identify common ways that communities strengthen their ties with each other through things like shared meals, regular or occasional gatherings, mutual support, singing (and dancing), shared work, resource sharing, and much more. The workshop will also address the challenges, hard parts, and even the potential negative elements that can be part of unhealthy communities. Come be inspired and go away with ideas and tools to build more community wherever you are.
